Support of Newberg Animal Shelter
Story
The old shelter was a 20 X 20 shed and no longer maintainable. A new larger facility was built in 2012 and the animals moved to the new shelter in March of 2013, even though the interior and exterior are not fully completed. In July, 2014, the City of Newberg eliminated their Animal Control Program. As of October 2018, NASF purchased the shelter and property from the City of Newberg. This allows us to continue our no-kill animal shelter for the care of homeless animals.
Impact
If this facility is not available, the local community will need to use the County or State facilities, which are already over burdened. Local lost pets will not be given a second chance.
Challenge
The old shelter can house about 7 dogs and a few cats. With the population growth of Newberg, we need more kennel space. It is not large enough for volunteers to work with the animals and make them more adoptable. It's too small and in too poor condition to be open to the public. There are no public hours of operation for the community to view adoptable pets. There is a need to have an animal shelter in the City of Newberg and we have been working on this goal since year 2000.
