Help 15,000 Ugandan grandmothers care for children
Story
We support 15,000 grandmothers across 3 districts in rural southwest Uganda to care for more than 60,000 children. These grandmothers have volunteered to care for their own grandchildren and other unrelated children who have been orphaned or abandoned. We provide extensive training, access to microfinance & support to start small businesses so that these grandmothers can learn new skills, generate an income and provide food, education and medical care for their children.
Impact
Grandmothers and orphans cannot succeed without one another. A child must be supported both at school and at home; this means assisting grandmothers to assist their grandchildren. Your donation provides the grandmothers with tools and opportunities that allow them to create more stable home environments and thriving communities. "I am supported and loved because I am a Nyaka granny." Grandmother Serena, 80+ years old, 13 years with Nyaka
Challenge
These grandmothers, in their twilight years, have taken responsibility for a generation of grandchildren who have been orphaned, abandoned or are otherwise especially vulnerable. These grandmothers are living in extreme poverty, on $1-2 per day, without social security, retirement, child welfare or health care. Our program means that grandmothers can generate an income, and provide more than 60,000 children with a safe and loving home and access to health care and education opportunities.
