Menstrual Equity for Girls in Latin America
Story
Days for Girls (DfG) empowers social enterprise leaders across Latin America in their community outreach to women & girls with DfG menstrual pads and health education. Local leaders are best positioned to break through cultural stigmas associated with menstruation. We're pleased to expand our outreach beyond Guatemala to include Haiti, the Dominican Republic (DR), Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Together, let's promote menstrual dignity to unleash their unlimited potential in this life-changing work!
Impact
Equipped with the knowledge of how their bodies function, girls will experience less anxiety from their natural body processes and will be able to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health. Menstruation will no longer be an impediment for attending school, removing one more barrier for vulnerable girls. This means better outcomes for girls and future generations. We know that when we invest in girls, their potential is unleashed, and entire communities are elevated!
Challenge
Girls in rural and impoverished communities often go without adequate menstrual supplies. This is equally true for girls in Central and South America. Of the 23 million Latin American young women, 64% are affected by poverty. The impact of Covid-19 in these communities has caused a decrease in health education due to school closures and a sharp increase in teen pregnancies.
