Story

Through a social and emotional learning (SEL) program, this project will help 1,200 indigenous girls in Chiapas to strengthen their abilities and take care of their emotions in order to prevent gender violence and school drop-out. We are working with small groups in outdoor spaces to provide emotional support to girls, organising workshops, sports and artistic activities and making radio spots in indigenous languages to prevent gender violence.

Impact

The project aims to strength 1,200 indigenous girls with social and emotional learning and resilience. In the long run we will accompany these girls until they complete high school. Girls will learn to communicate their needs, detect gender violence and seek help in a daily basis. Indigenous girls will also improve their artistic skills and create radiophonic spots in indigenous languages. These messages will help communities to prevent gender violence.

Challenge

Before COVID-19 pandemic, more than 67% of indigenous adolescents in Mexico were not in school. During the pandemic, 25% of female adolescents in the municipalities we work had to drop out of school. Half of the adolescent population with whom we work live in communities without access to contraceptive methods, where girls get married or involved in early unions. School dropout rates have worsened during the pandemic and regenerated cycles of violence, gender inequality and early pregnancies.
