Story

Days for Girls (DfG) Lebanon is bringing locally made, washable menstrual Kits and health education to women. Since 2011, Lebanon has experienced an influx of refugees of which women and children comprise 1.5 million of the overall population. With protracted displacement, refugees have multiple humanitarian needs; among them are the challenges of managing menstruation with privacy, dignity, and safety.

Impact

DfG Pads are long-lasting, freeing Lebanon women from the current economy. Our health education can increase body confidence and decrease shame, thereby empowering women with more knowledge about their bodies. "Education is just as important as the Pads because it teaches information that most of them don't already knowIt has a lasting impact because they can pass the information on to their daughters, who will then pass it down to their daughters."- Khayrieh, Country Coordinator

Challenge

In 2020, Lebanon experienced the impact of COVID-19, political unrest, and economic crisis. Inflation caused menstrual product prices to skyrocket 500%. While the government implemented subsidies, menstrual products weren't included. The August 4th Beirut explosions displaced 300,000 (81,000 of reproductive age 15-49) and compounded menstrual product scarcity. Limited gender-inclusivity in emergency response causes challenges for both Lebanese and refugee women in managing their menstruation.
