Water for All: pedal pumps and wells for families
Story
We want to buy and to promote the use of manual pedal pumps in the villages in the district of Mangochi.Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa with a high percentage of children suffering from malnutrition. Pedal water pumps are an indispensable asset for the cultivation, which permits the village to cope with food insecurity. The second problem to cope with is access to drinking water:building wells in the villages will help families to prevent the spread of cholera.
Impact
Two wells will guarantee drinking water for at least 2 villages and 10 pedal pumps will help 10 families (around 100 people) to be able to produce enough food for a whole year. The main results are an improvement of the production from the fields and the harvest, a reduction of the percentage of the population suffering from malnutrition, and as a consequence the prevention of many diseases connected to malnutrition and poor living conditions.
Challenge
Malawi, even though a country with natural resources, remains one of the poorest countries in Africa with a high percentage of children suffering from malnutrition. Despite the presence of many water basins, the land is very dry for most part of the year and access to drinking water is still a serious issue in many villages.
