Arts and heritage: change a child's life in Oaxaca
Story
With you as an ally this project can grant 900 indigenous children in hostile home environments access to cultural educational workshops. Due to natural disasters and the ongoing global pandemic caused by COVID 19 most of these children are currently living in limited education conditions. The Art and Heritage Route School program will provide an opportunity to enhance these children's zapotec identity & heritage.
Impact
This project will supply a local government public amendment that promotes an alternative education system as a resilience tool to overcome several of the social conflicts that could arise in our region. Through it, artisans will have a better and more stable income and children will be proud of their Zapotec heritage. With this amendment we aim to strengthen Zapotec identity by educating 150 children during pandemic lockdown and 250 children per year when Covid-19 restrictions allow it.
Challenge
Over the last years more than 3,000 zapotec children have gone through two crises:an earthquake and The COVID19 lockdown. We were getting back on our feet when the pandemic struck and paused our emotional and community reconstruction. The sum of both crises has worsened the situation causing a loss of two entire school years, growing up in hostile environments and missing an important stage of their social interaction. This program will give 900 children access to cultural educational workshops
