Story

Be Enriched and partners have converted a doubledecker bus into a mobile fruit and veg market, bringing affordable food to areas of high need in Wandsworth and Lambeth. The bus has an affordable cafe, a green grocer and seating with free internet access. In 2022 we will be offer programming for the community, including cooking classes, advice, nutrition education, and community events.

Impact

This project will increase access to healthy and affordable food, and will improve the nutrition knowledge and cooking skills of the local community members, leading to improved health and well-being.

Challenge

Many places in the country are badly served by fresh food stores. Small supermarkets present higher food costs and provide limited access to healthy and affordable food. As a result people will often choose cheaper, more filling foods over fruit and vegetables, often to the detriment of their health. A 2018 Cambridge University study found that people on low-incomes who live furthest from their supermarket were more likely to be malnurished that those who live close by.
