Story

Brixton People's Kitchen is your local community food project that aims to tackle food poverty throughout Lambeth and beyond. In an often intense battle against food waste and nutritional inequality, we pride ourselves on knowing the needs and wants of our community. Our community shop goes hand in hand with our community cafe. Meaning everyone has a safe space in which they can come together, eat, and do their weekly shop for just 5- as well as going away with many goodies for free.

Impact

We are building a community of people who understand the nutritional values of food and give families access to these ingredients with pride and dignity. We prevent food waste, saving food from landfill and diverting it to hungry mouths and bellies. We are currently supporting over 250 households a week, and aim to widen our reach through multiple projects and by opening more community hubs. Thus, enriching our communities through food and creating an even playing field for all to thrive.

Challenge

Now more than ever, adults and children affected by food insecurity have a lack of access to public recourse, nutritious food, and often do not have the privilege to consistently choose fresh high-quality ingredients. With continued cuts to our benefits system, our families are struggling and come to us for help. Not only this, our communities have little to no space to come together, share ideas, and grow. Leading to isolation and a lack of community cohesion throughout our London boroughs.
