Malaria Prevention Saves Lives
Story
Malaria is the biggest killer of man. Every 2 minutes a child dies from malaria. Until there is a cure prevention is the only way to save lives. The Butterfly Tree runs a successful malaria prevention program in remote communities in Zambia, providing mosquito nets, a safe insecticide coating for the inside of houses, and larvicide granules to prevent the larva from developing into mosquitos when placed in the breeding grounds. These interventions can save the lives of vulnerable children.
Impact
Malaria is a global problem. Until there is a cure prevention is the only way to help the fight against malaria. The long-term impact of this project has enormous potential. Lives will be saved, less new cases will occur, and the impact on the economy will be substantial. So many working hours are lost due to malaria. With drug-resistance now appearing in Africa it is vital to have universal protection methods for these vulnerable communities. These methods will help to eradicate malaria.
Challenge
Malaria is prevalent all year round in Zambia. Everyone is at risk but most especially children under the age of five. 70% of all deaths caused by malaria are this category and occur in sub-Sahara Africa. Until there is a cure prevention is the only way. The government is unable to provide sufficient mosquito nets for everyone and people living in remote villages are often left out. Residual spraying is supposed to take place every six months inside each dwelling, sadly it does not always occur.
