Story

This project will assist the aged living with dementia. About one-third of all people age 85 or older may have some form of dementia, but it is not a normal part of aging. Many people live into their 90s and beyond without any signs of dementia. There are several different forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. As many as 7% of adults aged 60 and older suffer from dementia. Along with problems with memory, language, and decision-making abilities.

Impact

Our initiative to support local communities have a number of positive outcomes. Our efforts have already increased access to primary old peoples healthcare for thousands of aged patience. This results in more regular medical care which improves maternal and paternal morbidity/mortality. Additionally, we are working to curb rates of osteoarthritis, depression and dementia. As people age, they are more likely to experience several conditions at the same time.

Challenge

In the rural communities in Lagos and some part of Ogun State, many aged people are faced with limited or no access to key health care services. Long distances, high transportation costs and low levels of income leave these aged people isolated from specialized physicians working in the nearest cities. Although the Ministry of Health is working diligently to hire specialists to work in rural communities, budgetary constrains have left these communities in continuing need of additional help.
